How to Keep Rats Away From My Caldwell House?

Oct 7

Rats are some of the troublesome pests that can invade your home and cause destruction. They eat and contaminate food, damage property, and can even spread disease.

They are pesky creatures that thrive in a wide variety of climates and conditions. They can be found anywhere from your home, on farms, or near open fields but they're most commonly spotted within city limits where there is plenty of space to breed!

Rats are always the unwelcome house guest that we hope to never have. Unfortunately, they are attracted to our homes for the same reasons. Homeowners should know why and how rats enter our homes so we can prevent them from taking over. Rats are looking for three main survival needs: food, water, and shelter.

Food

Rats are attracted to areas where there is a plentiful food source. The first place to check for signs of rats is the kitchen. Food scraps, pet food, or open containers are all easy-to-access meals for rats. Once they find a food source, they will continue to come back for more and will bring other rats with them!

Water

Although rats can survive for a month without water, they will definitely need water to survive. Rats will drink about a 1/2 ounce of water each day. A small drip from a pipe or faucet can be enough to attract rats. They are also attracted to areas where there is a lot of moisture such as, around the toilet or sink, in the laundry room, or even the outside hose faucet.

Shelter

Rats need a place to build their nests and will look for any small opening to squeeze through. Cracks in the foundation, windows, or doors that are not sealed properly are all potential entry points for rats. Once they are inside, they will build their nests in attics, crawl spaces, or any other undisturbed areas.

Knowing what rats are looking for is the first step in keeping them away from your home. The next step is to take action and start preventing them from getting inside.

How to keep rats away?

Seal up any cracks or holes on the outside of your home. This includes repairing any damaged screens, caulking around windows and doors, and repairing any foundation cracks.

Keep your yard clean and free of debris. Keep trash cans sealed tight and do not leave food out.

Remove any sources of water from your property. This means fixing any leaks, draining standing water, and removing any pet water dishes that are left outside.

You can also use traps to catch rats that are already inside your home. Baited traps can be placed in areas where you have seen rat activity.
